AN INTRODUCTION TO SOFT PASTELS
A BEGINNER’S COURSE
Adults (18+)
In this 5-week series of workshops, discover how to successfully work with the brilliant colours of soft pastels. With brief PowerPoint presentations, live demonstrations and hands-on in-class exercises, you will be given the information you need to play comfortably with this vibrant versatile medium. You will learn about the varieties and uses of hard and soft pastels, the different pastel surfaces used, under-paintings and layering processes. Participants will have fun and leave with newfound pastel confidence and artworks to be proud of!
Meet Your Instructor
Clarence began his career in Toronto’s advertising industry as a graphic designer/art director, before moving to freelance illustration. Over 30 years, he worked in various mediums, from scratchboard to colored pencils, inks, and digital art for diverse projects.
After relocating to Hamilton, Clarence began exploring pastels, eventually earning an Honorable Mention in the Pastel Artists Canada’s 15th Annual “Purely Pastels” Exhibition. This recognition fueled his passion for pastels, which he continues to pursue.
Clarence received his Master Pastel Artist of Canada (MPAC) designation, his signature membership in the Pastel Society of America and recently he received his Master Circle designation from the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).
Clarence is represented by Earls Court Gallery in Hamilton. He teaches part-time at the Dundas Valley School of Art and occasionally at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Clarence continues to inspire others through live and Zoom pastel demonstrations and private mentoring sessions all across North America.
