Description
Stitches: The Art of Sybil Rampen
This exhibition shows over 80 pieces of fibre art created by Sybil Rampen between 1973 – 2024. In 1973, Constance Howard (1919-2000,) a leading English textile artist and embroiderer, came to lecture at Sheridan College. Sybil attended Constance’s classes and her life changed forever. For over 50 years, since then, Sybil has made wall hangings, sculptures, vestments and sculptures using hand embroidery, machine stitchery, and collage. She often uses natural materials like wild cucumber and milkweed – something Sybil spearheaded.
Stitches: The Art of Sybil Rampen is a tribute to Constance Howard and the other teachers who shared their knowledge. Sybil, herself, went on to be recognised as an important and influential figure in the Canadian Fibre Art world. Her experimental approach and generosity as a teacher have inspired many emerging and established artists.
